Lake Vermilion Area
Lake Vermilion is a 40,000 acre lake of sky blue waters featuring 365 islands (an island for every day of the year) and nearly 1200 miles of shoreline. The northeast end of Lake Vermilion joins the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Enjoy Trout Lake from the Trout Lake Portage. From Trout Lake you can canoe into 4 other lakes. There are numerous bays and islands the east-west layout makes it easy to navigate. All lake hazards are marked with buoys.
This glacial shield lake with tremendous structure is known for Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskie, Large and Small mouth bass and plenty of pan fish. The DNR ranks the Walleye fishing as some of the best in the state.
Historically, at one time Lake Vermilion served as the boundary between the U.S. and Canada. Then iron ore was discovered on the east end and became the site of Minnesota's first iron mining operation. Visit the city of Tower and take a tour of the richest and deepest iron ore mine in the area.
The Pike River and numerous smaller streams flow into Lake Vermilion. The Vermilion River is the main outlet. Lake Vermilion watershed drains north, ultimately to Hudson Bay, because the lake is north of the Laurentian Divide.
The recreational opportunities on Lake Vermilion are endless. There is lots of room on larger bays to water ski, run your powerboat, enjoy a day of windsurfing or spend the day sailing. In the smaller bays you may want to try your hand at canoeing or kayaking.
There are plenty of places to have dinner at on the lake. Lake Vermilion also has an 18-hole golf course named the Wilderness that will impress everybody. What a beautiful place to visit and live.

The Iron Range stretches from Hibbing in the west to Hoyt Lakes on the eastern end, with eight communities in between: Chisholm, Buhl, Mountain Iron, Virginia, Eveleth, Gilbert, Biwabik and Aurora. United by their common mining origins, each of these cities offers its own particular brand of family fun.
